Distantly related to humans, the halflings were primitive nomads of the plains. When the early elves rescued them from the predation of dragons, the grateful tribes swore allegiance to their saviors. This willing alliance and service was abused and developed into slavery during the desperate centuries of the dwarven-elvish wars. Although many halflings fled back to the plains, and others have escaped or won the freedom in the ensuing centuries, to this day many nobles consider halfling slaves or servants as a status symbol.
Halflings have few permanent settlements, with the largest nations being plans nomads. Halfling caravans and trade fleets are also common sights across the known world. In the lands of the larger races, halflings sometimes live in small isolated farming villages, or sometimes in specially constructed size-appropriate quarters of larger cities.
